Palmer Asphalt Company Palmer Newsletter Volume 1, May 2007 PALMER ASPHALT CELEBRATES OUR 75TH ANNIVERSARY Palmer Asphalt Company was incorporated in 1932 as a producer of asphalt roof coatings and cements, specialty asphalt coatings and shellac. Materials were marketed under our BULLDOG brand as well as under private label. Abraham Van Ripps acquired an interest in the company in 1934 after retiring as a newspaper editor. Lewis S. Ripps, company Chairman, began his career at Palmer in 1956. Van Ripps, son of Lewis, and current President of Palmer Asphalt joined the company in 1981 representing the third generation of this family owned and managed company. What’s New: New Product Numbers: All BULLDOG products are getting a new look with the addition of a product number to be associated with each product. Many of our customers have advised us that a product number makes it easier for their sales staff to identify with a particular product as well as for ordering. We listened to your request. The product numbers will soon be appearing on our labels. In the 30’s thru 50’s the majority of roofing products were sold by lumberyards, general building supply centers and hardware stores. Beginning in the early 60’s wholesale roofing distribution that service professional contractors became the primary source of materials for roofing contractors. BULLDOG products are sold through wholesale distribution and are for use by professional roofing contractors who demand quality products and service. The mission of Palmer Asphalt Company is to manufacture the highest quality materials, be responsive to our customers needs, provide superior product knowledge and provide a safe and secure working environment for our employees. We are proud of never laying off an employee in our 75 year history. All factory personnel are full time employees. This insures consistently manufactured products by a trained and loyal workforce. Industry commitment is represented by Lewis Ripps’ participation as member and former chairperson of ASTM Committee D 08—05. Lewis was the first two term President of the Roof Coating Manufacturer’s Association (RCMA). Van Ripps is the immediate past President of the RCMA. Whether making roof repairs or performing roof restoration with BULLDOG brand quality products our PROTECTS * PROLONGS * PRESERVES slogan says it all. The principal products sold in the early days were asphalt roof coatings, asphalt roof repair cements and adhesives. In 1958 BULLDOG introduced wet surface roof technology to our customers. The 1960’s saw the infancy of the use of aluminum coatings. As the demand for this product grew so did the reputation of BULLDOG Aluminum Coatings for their long life and high reflectivity as well as the industry’s finest aluminum coating. BULLDOG products remain current with future industry trends with the development of our acrylic roof coatings that we offer for sale under our BULLDOG / DUREX trademark. Our products enjoy world wide acceptance. BULLDOG products have been exported to Central and South American, Europe, the Middle and Far East.
